The Museum displays various materials of Egyptian origin, preserved thanks to the country’s favourable climate. These include texts in multiple languages—Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Latin—and scripts such as Hieroglyphic, Hieratic, Demotic, Greek, Coptic, and Latin. Through its collection, the Museum provides an intimate and direct glimpse into the lives of ordinary people as well as notable authors, administrators, scribes, farmers, and merchants. Each fragment tells a story; each written line offers a window into ancient civilization through official documents, private contracts, personal letters, and literary and religious texts. The Museum also functions as a living research laboratory where scholars and students work to decipher and interpret these remarkable documents, supported by a specialized library and a Papyrus Restoration Laboratory. It is home to the Soknopaiou Nesos Project, a research initiative launched in 2003 that focuses on studying and excavating the Greco-Roman settlement of Soknopaiou Nesos (Fayyum, Egypt). An exhibition space within the Museum is dedicated to this project.
