Non-newtonian pool - Can you walk on water ?
Activities proposed
Would you be able to walk on water? At the Night we challenge you to try in our non-Newtonian pool!
Inside you will find a very special fluid: a suspension of water and cornstarch, behaving both like a liquid and like a solid.
When you run or apply a quick force, starch particles move closer together and trap the water: the fluid becomes semi-rigid and… you can walk on it!
But if you stand still or press slowly, the mixture flows like a liquid – just like quicksand.
A surprising phenomenon that is not only fun: non-Newtonian fluids also have real applications in engineering, biology, and safety (for example in dense fluid body armors that harden upon impact).
