Waves and Symmetries – amazing (acoustic) resonances
Are you fascinated by waves and symmetries? Then this is your stand! You will experience the magic of the various shapes assembled by salt grains when the acoustic frequency applied to a metallic plate on a speaker changes.
And for the most curious, there will also be the opportunity to discuss the many kinds of waves found in nature: from electromagnetic to mechanical waves, and even spin waves. We will explore the possibilities of confining these waves (see also Guided by Water – Liquid Fibers) or exploiting them to transmit information and energy, to probe the mechanical properties of matter, or even to separate particles and circulating tumor cells using acoustofluidics, opening new avenues for research. These topics are further developed within the Omnics Laboratory – EMFL and IRIS research infrastructures.
👉 Curiosity… The resonance figures you will see live are also used in art and music: a striking example appears in the video Ring of Powers (Amazon Studios ©), where sand draws shapes that dance with sound frequencies.
