Seafood industry waste: an untapped treasure beneath the waves

Fish industry waste poses serious environmental and economic problems, including pollution and high management costs. However, it represents a rich source of valuable compounds that can be extracted and used in various industries, offering a sustainable alternative to expensive and non-biodegradable chemicals and materials. Inspired by the biorefinery and circular economy concepts, we will showcase ongoing research at Unisalento and CNR-ISPA aimed at recovering useful products from shrimp and mussel shells and exploring their potential in the pharmaceutical and environmental fields.
