Holes, ribbons and other wonders

An interactive geometry lab to discover just how surprising the world of surfaces can be.
Selfie with a Mathematician: At our stand you’ll have the chance to snap a selfie with some of the greatest scientists of the past!
What is math for you? While waiting to join the games and workshops, you can share your thoughts about mathematics on an interactive poster. How much do you like it?
Orientability with paper and scissors: By cutting and twisting simple strips of paper, we’ll explore fascinating surfaces like the Möbius band. We’ll learn the difference between “orientable” and “non-orientable” surfaces.
Counting holes: the genus of surfaces: To tell surfaces apart, all you need to do is… count the holes! From donuts to coffee cups and even more complex shapes, we’ll see how topology classifies spaces based on this simple yet powerful feature.
Beyond Euclid: alternative geometries: We’ll dive into non-Euclidean geometries, where lines curve and angles don’t behave the way we expect. A journey that shows how mathematics can describe possible worlds very different from our own.
