A hands-on sandbox exhibit combined with 3D visualization applications. Simply mold the sand by hand and the landscape comes to life! The sand is augmented in real-time with an elevation color map, topographic contour lines, and simulated water [inspired by UC Davis].

An Xbox Kinect depth sensor captures the sand surface in real time. Our processing code turns the 3D data into a color map: red = higher, light blue = deeper. The map—together with contour lines and simulated water basins—is projected onto the sand, enhancing what you sculpt with your hands.
It’s a hands-on augmented-reality demo: a sandbox + 3D sensing + live projection to “see” topography come to life.
