Young Researchers from the "G. Deledda" ITET in Lecce for the protection of the environment and human health.

The ITET “G. Deledda” Institute in Lecce consistently provides its students with opportunities to engage in scientific research across various fields of environmental and health biotechnology. This is made possible through collaborations between the school's teachers and researchers and professionals from various organizations, including the National Research Council (CNR), the DiSTeBA Department at the University of Salento, other research and training centers, and both public and private botanical gardens.

Here are a few examples of these programs, which are part of the school's work-related learning initiatives (Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation, known by the Italian acronym PCTO), and are conducted in the school's labs:

Air Quality Monitoring 

This program, conducted as part of the Scientific Degree Plan - Environmental Sciences at the University of Salento, involves monitoring air quality near the Deledda Institute. Students perform gravimetric and chromatographic analysis of PM10, evaluate how air pollutants interact with plants as bioindicators, and identify the main sources of PM10 emissions.

Experiential Learning in Plant Biology

As part of the Scientific Degree Plan - Biology and Biotechnology, this initiative focuses on several key areas. Students learn methods for plant pressing and studying plant biodiversity. They experiment with extraction techniques to enhance the value of plant products for use in health, environmental, and industrial applications. They also explore traditional and innovative cultivation techniques, such as soilless cultivation.

Construction of a Biolake

This system functions as a natural ecosystem where water is purified through the interaction of microorganisms, plants, and fish, without the use of chemicals like chlorine. The biolake creates a biodiversity-rich habitat for plants and animals, which are components of the food web at various trophic levels. This experience was carried out in collaboration with the EZEN Natural Park and Botanical Garden in Aquaponics, and as part of the L.In.F.A. project, funded by the "Con i Bambini" Foundation.
