The project ERC-MINING: Fiber optics as a probe for brain health
Activities proposed
For
Capturing the dynamics of brain activity across its various components—by deciphering the complex electrical and chemical signaling exchanged by the different constituents of brain tissue—represents a fundamental challenge for neural interfaces.
MINING aims to create a new class of multifunctional neural endoscopes capable of both stimulating and detecting electrical and molecular signals with cellular resolution *in vivo* throughout a volume of brain tissue. The result will be an unprecedented ability to correlate multiple signal types within the same volume, achieving high spatial and temporal resolution at depth. Current state-of-the-art limitations will be overcome by leveraging light-matter interactions in hybrid metal-dielectric metasurfaces and their synergistic integration with organic electrochemical transistors.
