The activities and results of the MISSION project (Monitoring for the Abatement of Health Risks in Indoor Pollution – funded by the Ministry of Health) will be presented. The project aims to implement long-term measures to improve air quality in elementary schools and reduce health risks for the school population associated with chemical, physical, and biological indoor air pollution. The synergies of concurrent health and environmental monitoring, conducted in 24 classrooms in each of the following regions: Lombardy, Tuscany, Marche, Puglia, and Sicily, have allowed us to connect indoor air quality with public health aspects and evaluate the effectiveness of indoor pollution mitigation actions. Specifically, results from elementary schools in Lecce, Milan, and Pisa will be discussed.
